The wait is finally drawing to an end as the 2020 Hyundai i20 launch is apparently happening on October 28. The all-new i20 was revealed earlier this year in March. Recently, it entered production at the company’s manufacturing plant in Turkey with sales already commencing in some European markets. The premium hatchback will come with updates in design, features and engine. The new-gen 2020 Hyundai i20 will compete against the likes of Maruti Baleno, Honda Jazz and Tata Altroz in the Indian market. Hyundai will locally manufacture the i20 at Chennai facility in India while exporting internationally too.
The South-Korean automaker has extensively refreshed the design of the new hatchback. If we take a look at the images surfaced online, the new i20 is aggressive and sharper in design in comparison to the outgoing model. The upcoming hatchback design is largely influenced by other Hyundai models like Verna and Elantra. There are plenty of updates to look forward to like the cascading front grille and bumper, elongated bonnet and headlamps housing new LED DRLs and rear LED tail lights. The hatchback will ride on a new set of dual-tone alloy wheels.
Moving forward to the interiors, the Indian buyers can expect new cabin upholstery, steering wheel design (borrowed from Creta), automatic climate control and rear AC vents too. Other key highlights are a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, ambient lighting and fully-digital instrument cluster. Also, we can expect Hyundai India to offer standard features like a driving assist system, connectivity system and smart cruise control.
The 2020 new-gen Hyundai i20 engine options will include a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The transmission duties will be taken care of by manual and automatic units. In the near future, there is a good chance that the 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) and 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) units will be offered with the hatchback as we saw with the Hyundai Venue.
The standard safety features on-board would include dual front airbags, parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts and blind-spot monitoring system among others. Dimensions wise, the international model is bigger than the current i20 on sale in India. However, the manufacturer would reduce the dimensions of the India-spec i20 below four metres to save on the taxes. As for the price, expect the 2020 Hyundai i20 to be retailed at a premium over the outgoing model which retails at Rs 6.56 Lakhs (ex-showroom, India). More details on pricing and features would follow as we inch closer to the launch date.
