Mahindra & Mahindra, one of India’s leading car manufacturers, recently inaugurated two facilities at Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. The new Mahindra facilities include the Passive Safety Lab (PSL), the Cell Research Laboratory, and the Battery Proto Build Shop. One of these facilities will be utilized to test the safety of upcoming Mahindra SUVs. The auto giant has formally set up battery and cell research and passive safety labs for its engineers.
According to the brand, in the new Mahindra laboratories, engineers are going to test the safety of cars, and thorough research will be conducted on each model’s cell technologies. In addition, the laboratories have been set up with an investment of more than INR 300 crore. All of Mahindra’s SUVs are manufactured from scratch at the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), and the new facility is just 55 km away from this research valley.

The Passive Safety Lab (PSL) is intended for crash test support of cars with reference to the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) and NCAPs of Australia and Europe. At the same time, the Battery & Cell Research Lab will cover the areas of research, analysis, and development of battery cells, packs, and modules.
According to Mahindra, there is a block for crash testing of electric vehicles (EVs) with a separate area for blocks and garages to study the details. The preparation part of the facility also contains preparation workshops, painting areas, tear-down spaces, and soaking rooms.
The President of the Automotive Technology & Product Development division of Mahindra, Velusamy R, shared his views regarding the inauguration of the new Mahindra testing facilities; he stated, “Our engineers will now work on these highly sophisticated labs to develop the most fascinating and safe SUVs for our customers.”
As part of its new initiative, the homegrown car manufacturer is aiming to launch several new electric cars in the Indian market. Some of the upcoming Mahindra cars will be manufactured from scratch, while others are going to be launched as electric versions of the outgoing Mahindra ICE-powered models.
