The new-gen Mahindra Thar world premiere tomorrow is one of the biggest automobile events of 2020. Firstly launched in the Indian market in 2010, the SUV has been a roaring success story for Mahindra. The Indian SUV segment is a highly competitive one with the presence of major automobile brands. Despite the increasing competition, Mahindra Thar continues to churn out good numbers with over 40,000 plus units sold in the last six years. The new-gen Mahindra Thar launch is going to stir up the Indian market. The bookings, deliveries and launch date will be announced at a later date.
The second-gen Mahindra Thar will come with a revamped design with the silhouette carried over from the older model. It will sport a redesigned front grille surrounded by the same round headlamps of the previous model. The front fenders are larger if we go by the spy shots. Mahindra is also offering a removable hardtop as a factory-fitted feature with the powerful off-roader SUV. The rear will feature large LED tail lights with the iconic Thar badging. With the inclusion of a spare tyre at the rear door, the 2020 Mahindra Thar looks formidable.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar’s cabin will be vastly different from the outgoing model. Power windows are there with plastic cladding on doors. The revamped dashboard will come with a much larger touch screen infotainment system. Other key highlights are automatic climate control and comfortable front facing rear seats. The instrument panel is redone completely and features analogue tachometer and speed units which give information about fuel and engine temperature.
The new-gen Mahindra Thar will come with two BS6 compliant engine options - a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol. The 2.2-litre diesel motor has already been seen in the BS6 Mahindra Scorpio and BS6 Mahindra XUV500. The diesel engine will deliver 140 bhp of power and 320Nm of torque. Reports of a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion engine making its way to Thar are there but the final details will be revealed post-launch. Transmission duties will be handled by a manual gearbox as standard but Mahindra might surprise us by adding an automatic transmission with the petrol engine.
