The wait may finally be over for the Tesla (Car) fans in India. The EV pioneer is all set to put their vehicles on display in Delhi and Mumbai. This move comes after Indian PM Narendra Modi recently met Elon Musk in the US.
The EVs will come in from the Tesla's Berlin plant in Germany. There is also a hint that suggests the international EV brand will invest around $5 billion in India.
Why Tesla is Launching in India Now?
Tesla had long delayed its India entry due to high import duties because it made their cars significantly more expensive. Now with the new Union Budget 2025 and favourable import policies, the famous EV carmaker has decided to set up shop here.
The Indian government has reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%. Moreover, EV component manufacturing is now easier in the country with lower taxes and better credit access.
The momentum also worked for this event as Elon Musk recently met Prime Minister Modi in the US which likely included discussions about Tesla’s future in India.
Meanwhile, Tesla has started hiring in India, scouting locations for showrooms, and planning a competitive price strategy for its first cars.

Tesla's April Launch Details
Tesla is yet to finalize land deals for manufacturing in the country. Meanwhile, the company is expected to import vehicles initially until a local production facility is set up. Reports suggest that these cars will come from Tesla’s Berlin plant in Germany.
Tesla will likely price its initial EVs around USD 25,000 (approximately ₹21 lacs). This puts it in direct competition with upcoming domestic EVs like the Mahindra BE6E and Tata Curvv EV.
Tesla has also begun preparations for its physical presence in India. The company has chosen two prime locations for its first showrooms in Aerocity (Delhi) and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) (Mumbai). These locations indicate Tesla’s focus on premium markets and early adopters in India.
Tesla has Started Hiring in India
Tesla has recently posted 13 new job openings in India in Mumbai’s suburban area, across sales, customer engagement, and service operations.
This hiring push strongly suggests that Tesla’s India launch is on track and the company is laying the groundwork for its operations.
