2020 has been quite an unusual year. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a drastic impact on the automobile industry. However, in the second half of the year, brands managed to recover. To everyone’s surprise, the two-wheeler segment witnessed an increasing demand. Scooters play a major role in the Indian two-wheeler market. It is one of the most affordable and practical modes of transport. This year saw quite a few scooters being launched in the country along with some getting a BS6 update. While Honda has been behind the growing popularity of scooters with the Activa for ages, there are other brands as well that have joined the race. Here is a list of the ‘Top 5 Scooters launched in 2020’ in the country. 


Honda Activa 6G


Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India launched the Activa 6G in January earlier this year. The scooter was introduced at Rs 63,912 (ex-showroom). At present, it is retailed in the price range of Rs 65,316 - Rs 71,746 (ex-showroom). Mechanically, the Acitva 6G is powered by a BS6 compliant 109cc fuel-injected single-cylinder engine that dishes out 7.68 bhp power and 8.79 Nm torque. The motor is linked to a CVT gearbox. Furthermore, the engine comes with a fuel-injection system and Honda’s ESP technology which makes it 10 percent more fuel-efficient. 


TVS iQube Electric


TVS Motor Company launched its first electric scooter, iQube also in January this year. It is priced at Rs 1.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The scooter is positioned in the premium electric scooter segment. Currently, it is only available in Bangalore. The e-scooter is powered by a 2.25 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a 4.4 kW electric motor that produces a top speed of 78 kmph along with a range of 75 km on a single charge. 


Bajaj Chetak Electric


Bajaj Auto India had launched the Chetak Electric scooter in the domestic market earlier this year. The scooter was introduced at an introductory price of Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered in two variants namely Bajaj Chetak Urbane and Bajaj Chetak Premium. It comes with a steel metal body. This fully connected electric scooter is offered with features like charge status, remaining range, and location. Talking about the performance, the scooter gets an IP67-rated 3kWh battery pack which delivers 5.3 bhp power and 16 Nm peak torque. Furthermore, it has a company claimed driving range of 95 kms. The battery pack takes around 5 hours of time to fully recharge. 


Yamaha Ray ZR 125


The Yamaha Ray ZR 125 scooter has been on sale in India for a while now. It is priced in the range of Rs 82,590 - Rs 88,346 (ex-showroom). The scooter is offered in three variants. Recently, the Japanese brand updated the scooter by replacing the old 113cc engine with a more powerful 125cc. Now the two-wheeler draws its power from a 125cc single-cylinder engine that churns out 8 bhp power and 9.7 Nm torque. The engine comes equipped with Yamaha’s Blue Core technology. Also, it now weighs 99 kgs which makes it the lightest offering in the segment altogether. 


Aprilia SXR 160


Piaggio India has just launched the Aprilia SXR 160 at a starting price of Rs 1,25,997 (ex-showroom) in the country. The new maxi-scooter comes with a long and comfortable seat thus offering a better riding experience. Performance-wise, the maxi-scooter is powered by a 160cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled, 3 valve fuel injection engine. The motor while being linked to a CVT gearbox generates 10.8 bhp of maximum power and 11.6 Nm peak torque.
