The automotive Industry is bouncing back after a chaotic first quarter caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Over the last few weeks, we have seen plenty of new launches or unveilings from different automobile manufacturers. Today, Toyota Corolla Cross was revealed in Thailand. Being an all-new offering in the compact SUV segment from the Japanese automaker, it will sport the iconic Corolla badge. The SUV version is vastly different from sedan, hatchback and wagon iterations of Toyota Corolla. It comes on the back of the unveiling of the Yaris Cross while it will be sold first in Thailand. Later, Toyota Corolla Cross will be sold in the various international markets by the end of 2021.

Design-wise, Toyota Corolla Cross is similar to Toyota’s RAV4. The front fascia has a polished grille surrounded by swept-back headlamps with black accents.  The Corolla Cross rear end features the same design with the bumper identical to the one in the front. The 5-seater SUV comes with a spacious cabin with leather upholstery. The burgundy colour themed cabin will come with a large touchscreen infotainment system. Toyota hasn’t revealed any information on interior features except that the safety features will be the same as the other Corolla models. It is expected to be equipped with Toyota Safety Sense features.  The Corolla Cross is expected to get various connected-car features as standard.

If we talk about the powertrains, the Corolla Cross comes with a petrol-hybrid and a petrol-only unit. The hybrid version will be powered by a 1.8L petrol engine (97bhp and 142Nm) with an electric motor (71bhp and 163Nm) while having a combined power output of 122bhp. The transmission duty will be handled by an electronic CVT unit. The petrol-powered variant will draw power from a 1.8L engine churning out 138bhp of maximum power output and 177 Nm of peak torque. The engine is coupled with a CVT gearbox.

About its arrival in the Indian market, Toyota hasn’t disclosed the details yet. For the Indian customers, Toyota is planning to launch the Urban Cross SUV and it’s going to be based on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.  If Toyota Corolla Cross is launched in India, it will compete against Jeep Compass and Skoda Karoq.
