If you have noticed, there are quite a few Tucsons around the city. The car has done well for Hyundai but, it was missing one major feature that makes it a SUV. This is all-wheel-drive. Hyundai has finally decided to bring this tech to the big SUV. However, one can only avail the AWD tech with the top-of-the-line GLS diesel variant. It will cost you Rs 25.44 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and it replaces the front-wheel-drive GLS model.
To get into the details, the all-wheel-drive system is front axle based which means the rear wheels only get power when needed. The car also gets a 4WD lock which enables one to drive all four wheels in a 50:50 ratio. Hyundai has also decided to provide a full-size spare wheel, which is nice. From the little bit of off-roading we did we could tell that the Tucson felt quite comfortable doing so. However, the real test for this Tucson variant will come to life when we put it up against the upcoming monsoon in mud and slush.
Out on the tarmac, this variant did put down power better thanks to the AWD system. This variant is equipped with the 2.0-litre diesel motor that makes 185hp and 400Nm of torque. Previously, the regular car would have a tough time putting the power down and the tyres would spin without grip. While the motor continues to be as nice as before, we do miss paddleshifters for the auto box.
The Tucson AWD is set up stiffer than the previous model and thanks to this the SUV doesn’t roll as much. It feels more stable in the corners as well. The steering has a good amount weight to it, but it still isn’t a fun-to-drive car. That said, the Tucson is a comfortable family SUV and it is comfortable. The seats are well-padded and there is lots of room in the back. The SUV also comes equipped with a decent amount of features like powered driver’s seat, drive modes, hands-free tailgate and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SUV still misses out on a sunroof though.
Should I buy one?
If you are keen on getting a Hyundai Tucson, the AWD one is the best variant to buy. But, if you have just started looking for a premium SUV in the 20-30 lakh range, you should consider having a look at the Volkswagen Tiguan. However, if you are considering the Tucson for the all-wheel-drive technology, you could wait a little longer and consider the off-road-spec Jeep Trailhawk.
