Volvo’s new XC60 is a jack of all trades.

  • Volvo XC60 in action.
  • Volvo XC60 front.
  • Volvo XC60 rear.
  • 235hp and 480Nm from a 2.0-litre diesel motor.
  • Top quality interior.
  • Decent rear legroom and headroom.
  • Large colour screen.
  • Huge sunroof opens up the car.

As far as mid-size luxury SUVs go, the all-new second-generation Volvo XC60 that will go on sale in India on December 12 is a great overall package. It’s an SUV that, like all Volvos, is loaded to the teeth with tech and safety.

On the Outside

The new XC60 is based on Volvo's SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform and it features all the new-age Volvo design trademarks. These include the Thor’s hammer LED daytime lights and the vertically-slatted chrome grille. The car is marginally larger than the model it replaces.

On the Inside

For now, there is only a single engine option and the car will be available in one fully-loaded version. Step inside and this car is instantly recognisable as a Volvo – there’s a strong resemblance to other Volvo cabins. The all-black dashboard features soft-touch plastics, with unlacquered wood trimmings. The front seats are covered with Nappa leather and are supremely comfortable. Lots of parts are shared with the more expensive XC90, so quality levels are at a class above. The car is also fitted with a 9.0-inch centre touchscreen that handle most of its functioning. Drivers also get a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster. The XC60 comes with cooled/ heated front seats that also get a massage function, there’s a head-up display, a brilliant Bowers and Wilkins sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. For quicker gearchanges, the car even comes with steering-mounted paddleshifters. There’s lots of driver aids as well, including a 360-degree camera, semi-automatic parking, blind-spot assist and lane departure warning. This Volvo also offers radar-based safety aids like adaptive cruise control.

While getting in to the back through the narrow entry is a bit of hassle, once you’re inside, you’ll find the rear seat very comfortable, there’s lots of support for your lower back and your thighs. There’s lots of legroom and headroom is sufficient as well. There’s no massage or cooling function for the rear seat though but the seats can be heated.

Under the Hood

Under the hood sits a 2.0-litre diesel engine in Volvo’s D5 form. The engine makes 235hp and 480Nm and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends all that power to all four wheels. This motor performs effortlessly, and you’ll never feel a lack of power at any point. All throughout the rev range, the engine feels smooth and sound levels inside the cabin are really low.

The XC60, for India, comes with four-corner air suspension as standard. The suspension also adjusts itself based on the driving modes. Bump absorption is very impressive, and the car feels quite stable at speeds. It’s also quite agile and eager to change direction. The steering is light and direct and weighs up well according to the mode you’ve selected. With 223mm of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the Volvo should be able to handle mild off-roading as well.

Should I Buy One?

The new XC60 looks smart, is beautifully turned-out on the inside, and comes loaded with equipment. It’s also quite comfortable and pleasant to drive. It’s a good balance of sporty and comfort, which owners in this segment tend to prefer. Volvo will launch the car on December 12 and we expect prices to start from ₹55 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom).
