Mahindra SsangYong is the result of Mahindra’s absorption of the Korean manufacturer. For some time in the past, automobile lovers had been waiting for the introduction of the premium SUV car under the Mahindra SsangYong banner. Ssangyong has a different origin story altogether, the Korean brand is not a single company, in fact, Ssangyong is made up by two companies, i.e. Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop (established in 1954) and Dongbang Motor Co (established in 1962). The companies merged to form Ha Dong-hwan Motor Co. and started manufacturing Jeeps and vehicles for the US Army.
After it acquired 70% shares of the Mahindra and Mahindra Company, the brand moved out to form a separate entity. Under the name, only one car model came out – Rexton. The Mahindra SsangYong Rexton was launched on the same date as that of Tata Safari Storme. First unveiled in the year 2012 at the Busan Motor Show in Korea, the car is now being sold in 66 countries around the world. New Mahindra Ssangyong car models compete with cars such as Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva and Hyundai Santa Fe.
In recent times, the company has been looking forward to launching electric cars in the Indian market. To make it possible, the company is taking help from its previous partner the Mahindra Electric. Moreover, the company is planning to push the boundaries of automobile technology by launching autonomous cars that will be launched in 2020. The company has been working on this project from a long time in collaboration with Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), and the Korean government has given a green signal for its road tests and evaluation, which mean soon there will be autonomous cars on the streets bearing the Ssangyong logo.
