  • Ford’s new 1.5 turbo petrol to get cylinder deactivation

Usually, cylinder deactivation is tech you see on cars with much larger engines. This tech is used to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. It involves shutting down a select number of cylinders when they are not required. This tech will even debut on the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine in early 2018.

Cylinder deactivation is now available with the 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and was shown on the European-spec Focus. In the hatchback, the new EcoBoost engine puts out 140hp or 180hp, depending on the version you pick. The engine will soon make its way to the Ford Fiesta hatchback in Europe, and the Fusion sedan and Escape SUV in the US. The older 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines will make way for this new unit.

We’re not sure when this tech will make its way to India, but for now Ford is set to introduce the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in the country, on the EcoSport compact SUV.
