Today, 21 'RAKSHITA' bike ambulances were inducted into the CRPF. The customized vehicle was unveiled at CRPF headquarters in Delhi by Dr AP Maheshwari, DG CRPF and Dr AK Singh, DS & DG (LS), DRDO. The bike ambulances are designed and developed indigenously for the timely evacuation of security personnel in the remote areas. Paramilitary forces observed the need for such vehicles in the event of an urgent evacuation in Naxal hit areas. It will be a useful aid for the security forces in case of a medical emergency.
"These bikes will be more useful in areas like Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada etc., as it is tough for the force to take big vehicles or ambulances inside the jungle," a CRPF official said to a media outlet. The customized bike ambulances would be quite beneficial for the soldiers operating in battle-hit surroundings where many have lost lives due to lack of response time. With the new bike ambulances in hand, timely evacuation of soldiers would help in reducing fatalities on the battlefield.
The bike ambulance is based on the popular Royal Enfield Classic 350 motorcycle. The ambulance is born out of a partnership between DRDO’s Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Allied Science (INMAS) and the CRPF. The customized unit comes equipped with a dashboard-mounted LCD unit for displaying vital health parameters. Additionally, the ambulance comes loaded with features like hand immobilizer, harness jacket, air splint medical, oxygen kit, adjustable footrest among many others.
"In its endeavour to provide impregnable internal security to the nation, CRPF is actively deployed across the country. Most of these deployments are in remote and inhospitable areas like Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas, North East, etc. where evacuation of sick or battle injured personnel becomes a challenge. Many times, late evacuation results in the loss of precious lives of CRPF. To mitigate this, in 2018, CRPF approached INMAS with the idea of developing an ambulance on motorbikes which is frequently used by CRPF for patrolling in these theatres," said Dr AK Singh, DS & DG (LS) to ANI.
