The German luxury car manufacturer BMW has rolled out the official safety car for MotoGP racing, the BMW M5. The automaker has been providing a fleet of safety cars to MotoGP since 1999. The latest addition to the MotoGP safety car lineup, the BMW M5, is scheduled to be showcased at the Grand Prix 2024 in Misano. The company recently revealed the M5 performance car with the latest hybrid powertrain.

The Vice President (Customer, Brand, and Sales) at BMW, Sylvia Neubauer, said, “We are proud of our long-standing partnership with MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports, and we have always aimed to ensure safety with the most innovative high-performance automobiles when the world’s best motorcycle racers take to the track. We are continuing this tradition with the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car."

The most notable feature of the BMW M5 MotoGP safety car is its livery. This performance car is based on the V8 Hybrid cars that compete in racing events like the IMSA series in North America and 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The BMW M5 has side skirts, a sculpted apron up front, and wide wheel arches. The surface design around the C-pillar area in the BMW M5 is the same as the other model.

To make the BMW M5 suitable for racing, the German car manufacturer has made some alterations, including the addition of M Performance-specific parts. These include carbon side skirts, carbon attachment up front, an aramid diffuser at the rear, a carbon fuel filler cap, and carbon-titanium tailpipe equipment.

On the safety front, the safety car is loaded with features like a roof bar, Recaro seats, a front splitter, 6-point racing harnesses, a fuel suction pump, and a fire extinguisher.

The new BMW M5 safety car comes equipped with the M hybrid powertrain. It draws power from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 unit followed by an electric motor. This setup churns out a combined power of 717 bhp and a peak torque of 1001 Nm. The engine is paired with the x-Drive AWD system via an eight-speed gearbox.
