Sustainable development is the underlying theme across the world with people now accepting environment-friendly means of transportation. Tesla isn’t a luxury brand anymore, its models are much sought after in the world by the common folklore. Electric vehicles are becoming more and more prominent in our daily lives with new models getting launched on a regular basis in India. Electric scooters trend in India is showing positive growth with Ather and Hero electric cornering a sizeable chunk of the market. Despite the higher cost of electric scooters in comparison to ICE models, it’s more cost-effective as the fuel prices increase on a daily basis. Ather 450 and 450X are one of the most popular range of electric scooters in the Indian market.

With the rise in the trend of electric-based vehicles, it’s not surprising to see experiments happening around. Pune-based EV specialist Hemank Dabhade is one keen automobile expert working closely with electric vehicles. He recently converted Chevrolet Beat diesel to EV and now he transformed the first-gen Honda Activa to an electric scooter. Impressive work, I must say. 

Hemank hasn’t carried out any major exterior updates in the Honda Activa and instead focused on the interior. He hasn’t totally removed the ICE mechanical components like the CVT system of Hero Activa is only modified. The motor shaft and electrical units are arranged in order as not to affect the existing suspension system. The modified Hero Activa Electric is powered by 1kW (1.34bhp) BLDC motor paired to a 1.44kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric battery replaces the 109cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine. Honda Activa Electric reaches a top speed of 65km/hr. On a single charge, the scooter can go upto 45 kms and if a pillion rider joins in, distance drops down to 35 km. The scooter will take 4-5 hours for the battery to go from empty to full by using a regular wall socket. As of now, the battery unit is placed in the under-seat storage department thus denying any storage space. Not practical per se but we can expect Hemank to make further improvements in his next projects.
