  • 5 Things to Know About the 2018 Volkswagen Polo

The German manufacturer recently revealed the all-new sixth-gen Polo at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, last week. The 2018 Polo is larger than its predecessor and has styling derived from the Golf. Here is a look at some of the important aspects of the new Polo.

1. Larger, where it matters

The 2018 Polo is longer and wider than its predecessor. The increase in external dimensions, combined with the clever packaging offered by the new MQB A0 platform, has led to increased interior space. Even though the new Polo sits slightly lower, VW is boasting a claimed 15mm increase in headroom up front and 30mm increase in headroom at the back. Boot space has also gone up by 71 litres to 351 litres.

2. Up-to date technology

VW has loaded quite a bit of technology under the skin of the New Polo, it gets a start/stop system, brake energy recuperation, tyre pressure monitor and a Pedestrian monitoring system as standard on the international spec car. Moreover, the carmaker will provide the Polo with optional features such as an all-digital instrument cluster and a wireless phone charger.

3. Six trim lines for the international market

The 2018 Polo will be sold in six different variants. On top of the familiar Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims, there will be a special Beats edition, R-line and the GTi. The Beats edition will feature an upgraded sound system and the R-line trim will feature re-designed bumpers, 16-inch alloy wheels and other special touches. The top-spec GTi which will feature a number of traditional styling cues, including distinctly styled bumpers, red highlights within the headlamps, 17-inch alloys, LED tail lamps and dual-chromed exhaust tips.

4. Engine options

The German carmaker will offer the Polo with a choice of four petrol engines and one diesel in international markets. The petrol engine options include a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, available as either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged unit. VW will also offer a larger 1.5-litre TSI unit and a range-topping 2.0-litre TSI unit for the new GTI, which is unlikely to make its way to India anytime soon. The 2018 Polo will be available with only one diesel engine option, a 1.6-litre diesel in multiple states of tune.

5. India launch unsure

There is no official news about VW introducing the sixth-gen Polo to India. The expensive MQB A0 platform it is based on makes an India launch unsure for the time being.
