The company is working on expanding its i all-electric sub-brand and recently formed iPerformance sub-brand. BMW recently applied for trademarks for the following names - iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8 and iX9. BMW’s i models are all-electric, so it’s safe to assume all these cars will be powered by an electric powertrain.
There is no confirmation yet on whether these cars will be based on existing models or whether they’ll be electrified versions of existing models.
Recent technical developments as detailed by BMW R&D boss Klaus Fröhlich just before the 2017 suggested that the brand is working on more electric SUVs. BMW has already trademarked the name i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9 in 2010, about three years before the i3 and i8 production models were showcased. The company has also trademarked the names E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8 and E9.
