The government will enforce stringent BS-VI emission norms by April 2020 and an engine that will be affected is Hyundai’s 800cc unit that powers the Eon.

The hatch is powered by two engines – the 56hp, 800cc Epsilon engine and a 69hp, 1.0-litre Kappa engine. Thanks to its price position, the 800cc engine variant forms the bulk of the Eon’s sales. But this motor might struggle to meet tighter emission norms. Creating an updated, cleaner version of the 800cc engine may work out too expensive for the carmaker.

The Eon looks set for a full model change around the same time and Hyundai may replace it with a model sporting a 'Santro' badge. Hyundai launched the Eon hatchback in 2011 to compete with the Maruti Alto. It currently competes with the Alto, the Renault Kwid and the Datsun Redigo.
