The carmaker has sold over 2 lakh units in India alone of its premium hatchback, the Baleno. Following the hatchback’s official launch on October 26, 2015, in less than a year, the carmaker sold 1 lakh units and crossed the 1.5 lakh mark six months later.
The car has been averaging sales of a little over 16,000 units for the past three months, and a total of 197,660 units have been sold till May 2017. Given this pace, we can safely assume the company has sold an additional 5,500 units, thereby crossing the 2 lakh-unit landmark.
Right from November 2015 through May 2017, the Baleno has been in the Top 10 at least 16 times. Its best sales figure was in April 2017 – 17,530 units. Of the total 197,660 Balenos sold between October 2015 and May 2017, 153,743 were petrol variants and 43,917 diesel. The popularity of the hatch hasn't been affected despite three subsequent price hikes – in January 2016 by up to ₹12,000 followed by another one in March 2016 up to ₹16,699 and in August 2016 by ₹10,000 (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). Maruti recently launched a sportier Baleno RS version to help boost sales even further.
With the capacity to make more cars now at the new Gujarat plant, and by supplementing it with the existing production at the Manesar plant, Maruti is producing more Balenos than ever before.
