Renault-Nissan recently acquired Mitsubishi; India plans to get a boost.

Mitsubishi is all set to step up its India presence, post its recent acquisition by Renault-Nissan. The new partnership will let Mitsubishi step out from the side-lines and cater to India’s widely growing auto market like they do globally.

Ending a 20-year technical collaboration with Hindustan Motors, where HM either imported or built and sold specific models like the Pajero, Outlander and the Lancer, Mitsubishi is now looking to launch more cars in India. This earlier collaboration also meant that many updates and new-generation models weren't immediately available, but things might change now. When asked if Mitsubishi will be looking to increase its presence in India, alliance boss Carlos Ghosn said, “Without any doubt, India is a very big future market for any carmaker and for Mitsubishi in particular.

Though exciting, we cannot expect much of these changes immediately as the company has a lot going on at a global scale and management will have to prioritize. For India, new products would need to be engineered on the alliance platform to justify the costs. Ghosn also said that CMF-A platform (that Renault’s most successful car in India, the Kwid, is built on) will also be available to Mitsubishi. With all this information, it remains to be seen which cars Mitsubishi will slate for release here in India.
