The BMW 5-series is going to be replaced by an all-new model on June 29. We tell you all that makes it worth waiting for.

  • New car facts: BMW 5-series

The Mercedes-Benz E-class rivalling 5-series has been one of BMW’s highest selling cars in India. Come June 29, 2017, a brand new model will hit showrooms. What new does it bring to the table?

Size matters
Measuring nearly 5 metres long, 1,868mm wide, 1,479mm high, and about 3 metres in the wheelbase, the new model is bigger than the 5-series it replaces. It is also more aerodynamic, and thanks to extensive use of aluminium and high-strength steel in its construction, it is also lighter and more rigid.

Under the hood
On offer are three engines – a 190hp 2.0-litre diesel, a 252hp 2.0-litre petrol and a 265hp 3.0-litre diesel. While the 2.0-litre diesel is likely to be a popular choice in this segment as the more frugal and more affordable diesel option, enthusiasts are sure to appreciate the bigger diesel engine for its strong performance; BMW claims it can hit 0-100kph in just 5.7sec. The petrol-powered 530i is also quite quick, and has a claimed 0-100kph time of 6.2sec. All three engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It’s packed with gizmos
Tech on board will include gesture control for the auto-climate control and audio system, a heads-up display that displays maps, music tracks, etc., a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and wireless phone charging to name a few. There’s also a remote-parking function that allows you to manoeuvre the sedan in and out of a tight parking spot.

Safety first
The new 5-series has already scored a 5-star rating in the latest instalment of Euro NCAP crash tests, so there’s no question that this is one of the safest cars out there. In addition to the de rigour safety features like airbags, ABS and EBD, it comes equipped with electronic driving aids like dynamic stability control, and corner brake control,

Rivals
The ₹50-65 lakh luxury sedan space has seen an onslaught of all-new models. In chronological order, these are the Jaguar XF, Volvo S90, Mercedes-Benz E-class Long Wheelbase and most recently, the Lexus ES300h. While the Jaguar XF and the Mercedes-Benz E-class can be had in both petrol and diesel variants, the Volvo S90 is only offered with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, while the Lexus comes only with a hybrid powertrain.
