The first model from the company’s 100-percent-owned automobile manufacturing subsidiary in Gujarat was exported. The car was an all-new Swift hatchback.
The plant also makes the Baleno hatchback. The company started making the all-new Swift there in January this year. The car was sent from Mumbai Port to South Africa, with Maruti Suzuki as its merchant exporter. India exports cars to over 100 countries and regions including Europe, Japan, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
In FY2018, Maruti Suzuki India exported a total of 1,23,903 units (+1.53 percent growth). SMG (Suzuki Motor Gujarat) was first started in 2014 and Plant No.1 became functional on February 2017 with annual production capacity of 2,50,000 units. Work on building Plant No.2 is ongoing and it will be ready in the first half of 2019, while Plant No.3 is in its planning stages. Total capacity for production will be 7,50,000 units.
