The company has announced that its WagonR hatchback has achieved a sales milestone of over 2 million units in the past 18 years. First introduced in 1999, the WagonR is one of the company’s best-sellers in India. Maruti sold 14,571 units in August 2017, compared to 13,907 during August 2016; the boxy car has nearly always made its way to the monthly list of top 10 cars sold each month.
Taxi and fleet vehicles have helped play a part here. Not only that, but the fact that Maruti has continuously upgraded the model with features such as dual airbags, multiple fuel options, ABS and an AMT gearbox. Interestingly, the model took 133 months to reach the one million sales mark, which it achieved in 2011, after which it took just 79 months to hit the 2 million mark.
Maruti claims that nearly 45 percent of WagonR customers are first-time buyers, while 20 percent have purchased the car multiple times. Markets such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad have the highest demand for the car, with the AMT variant accounting for 16 percent of sales.
The Wagon R has become the third car in the country after the Maruti 800 and Alto, to cross the two million sales mark.
