Based on the Concept X2, BMW showed its production-spec X2 at the Detroit motor show. The car is based on BMW’s UKL platform, and the most noticeable change is the fresh interpretation of the German carmaker’s signature kidney grille.
There are three styling packages on sale - Basic, M Sport and M Sport X. The interiors will be shared with the X1. There will be lots of black panel instruments and a multifunction steering wheel, but the 8.8-inch touch-sensitive iDrive panel and a head-up display will be optional extras.
The car is powered by turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, including the front-wheel- drive X2 sDrive20i petrol motor that puts out 190hp and 279Nm. There’s also a four-wheel- drive X2 xDrive20d diesel that makes 190hp and 400Nm.
The X2 xDrive25d is powered by a highly tuned 2.0 diesel producing 231hp and 450Nm, and BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 6.7sec and top speed of 237kph.
A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is fitted on the front-wheel drive cars, while the four-wheel-drive diesels are equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The German carmaker is looking at bringing the X2 to India in the middle of this year.
