Tata Motors is working on a new electric car based on the recently launched Tiago hatchback. This model is likely to be Tata’s first mass-produced electric car to go on sale in India. It will use battery technology that the carmaker has been developing for quite some time at its European Technical Centre (TMETC).
Being a low-cost platform, the Tiago makes for an ideal candidate for an electric vehicle, as it will help offset some of the costs of the battery and related components.
Furthermore, the GST scheme has made the government’s pro-electric vehicle stance clear, which is sure to have given Tata’s EV plans a boost. In addition to the Tiago EV, Tata is also prepping an electric version of the Nano hatchback. Over and above private owners, these vehicles are sure to find a ready market in the Ola-Uber taxi market.
