The figures quoted here are ARAI certified, so they don’t always reflect real-world efficiency figures as those tests are conducted in the lab under ideal conditions.
1. Datsun Redigo - 25.17kpl
The car is powered by a 54hp, 0.8-litre engine which also powers the Renault Kwid. Prices start at Rs 2.81 lakh (on-road, Delhi), and considering you get a frugal engine and youthful styling, the Redigo is a decent buy. There’s an AMT version, which costs Rs 3.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and it is as fuel efficient as its manual counterpart.
2. Renault Kwid - 25.17kpl
The Renault shares its engine with the Redigo, and the same ARAI-rated fuel-efficiency figure. The car features slightly more premium and spacious interiors, along with a touchscreen infotainment system on the top-spec trim. Prices start at Rs 2.67 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). There’s a 1.0-litre version and an AMT variant also on sale, or you could even get the Climber version.
3. Maruti Alto 800 - 24.7kpl
The Alto 800 costs Rs 2.51 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and is powered by a 48hp, 796cc motor. Thanks to its light weight and frugal engine, this car offers the third-best fuel efficiency figure on this list.
4. Maruti Alto K10 - 24.07kpl
This version is powered by a 68hp, 1.0-litre engine and is a great choice for a city car. Prices starts at Rs 3.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and there’s an automatic variant, which offers similar fuel efficiency as the manual.
5. Tata Tiago - 23.84kpl
Prices for the Tiago start from Rs 3.26 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It’s a good-looking hatchback that offers a stylish, yet practical interior, and there’s a fair amount of kit as well. There’s an AMT version also on offer.
6. Tata Nano GenX - 23.6kpl
This version is a significant improvement on the original Nano and is, currently, the most affordable car in India. Prices start at Rs 2.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the car is powered by an efficient 38hp, 624cc engine
7. Maruti Celerio - 23.1kpl
Prices start at Rs 4.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the car is powered by a 68hp, 1.0-litre three-cylinder motor that also features in the Alto K10. The car also gets an AMT transmission.
8. Maruti Dzire - 22kpl
The car is powered by a frugal 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine. The car offers peppy performance, good fuel efficiency, a good amount of cabin room and decent levels of equipment. Prices start at Rs 5.56 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
9. Maruti Baleno - 21.4kpl
At Rs 5.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the car is quite well equipped. It comes with an 84hp, 1.2-litre engine that helps transport its lightweight platform and body. There’s a decently long list of equipment too.
10. Hyundai Eon (0.8-litre) - 21.1kpl
The car is powered by a 56hp, 814cc motor and is still one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the market. The engine is a bit lacklustre though. Prices start at Rs 3.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
