German carmaker, Volkswagen is getting ready for the launch of its all-New Polo-based sedan for the South American market. The upcoming sedan, dubbed as the Virtus will be based on the MQB A0 platform.

The MQB A0 platform has been developed for multiple body styles - hatchbacks, cross-hatches, SUVs and sedans. The Virtus will make use of this platform and be a sedan alternative to the sixth-generation Polo. The teaser image is fairly revealing, it gives a good idea of the upcoming car’s side profile. From the looks of it, it looks like a cross between the Vento and more expensive Passat from Volkswagen.

The headlight design continues to remain typical Volkswagen however; the front bumpers now look sturdier. The rear bumper design has been changed too with the addition of all-new wrap-around taillights. The steeply raked D-pillar on the car flows into boot lid which is high-set. The wheelbase of the sedan is 2600mm which is an increase of 36mm over the polo hatchback. The sedan is also expected to come with an impressive boot space of 500 litres.

Interestingly, the Virtus will be available with two petrol engines - A 1.6-litre petrol engine delivering 117hp and 162Nm of torque and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol making 128hp and 200Nm of torque. The bigger engine will be mated to a five-speed automatic while the turbo-petrol will be linked to a six-speed automatic transmission.

There is no news of the Volkswagen Virtus sedan making its way to India anytime soon. Nonetheless, Skoda has confirmed that they are working on a cheaper ‘Eco’ platform that is based on the MQB one.
