While office commuting or during a road trip in our car, we spend most of our time being stuck in toll booth lines. But, after the statement from Road Transport And Highways Minister (MoRTH) Nitin Gadkari, there will be a relief from the congestion at the toll plazas. The announcement was made at the 2018 SIAM Annual convention in Delhi.
There will be 462 toll plazas across the country where RFID FASTags will be implemented. The FASTags are an RFID based technology which are present on the vehicles' windshield. These tags are linked to your bank account. Once you cross the toll, the amount will be deducted automatically from your account. This helps in maintaining a continuous vehicle movement without waiting for the toll attendant to provide an exact amount of change.
Presently there are very few FASTag users. The FASTag can be bought at various banks like SBI, Axis, ICICI and at the common service centre (CSC) near the toll plaza. Moreover, to promote the usage of these electronic toll collection, the National Highway Authority Of India (NHAI) has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation. The FASTags will also be available at Indian Oil fuel pumps across the country.
