  • Volvo Reveals India-Bound XC40

The XC40 is the first car to be built on the company’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform. It will be positioned below the XC60 and larger XC90.

The XC40 bears a strong family resemblance with the bigger XC60 and XC90. On the inside, the XC40 is more radical – there’s a 12.3in thin-film transistor (TFT) instrument display as standard, as well as a 9in touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard that’s fitted in portrait style, just like in the bigger XC60. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on all versions.

For the UK, the car will be sold with two turbocharged 2.0-litre engines. The range-topping T5 petrol will have 250hp and 350Nm and the D4 diesel will have 190hp, both with all-wheel drive and mated to an eight-speed autobox as standard. Front-wheel drive and manual gearbox versions will follow shortly, as will less powerful engines.

Like any car with a Volo badge, safety tech offered will be comprehensive – you can expect similar levels of protection to the XC90. The car will be available with an optional enhanced IntelliSafe system will include semi-autonomous piloted cruise control that can work at up to 130kph.

The car will take on the likes of the Mercedes GLA, the Range Rover Evoque and the Audi Q3. Volvo will bring it to our country sometime next year.
